Maximizing Battery Life
{| class="wikitable"
|+'''Measured Power Consumption of GPS handheld device''' Power consumption of a Garmin eTrex30x (should be nearly identical for eTrex20x devices).Running time calculated for fully charged NiMH batteries with a 2000 mA capacity and an average voltage of 1.25 V. Low Power Alarm: When voltage drops below 1.2 V. GPS Off: When voltage drops below 1.1 V

I do not fully trust the theo¬retical running time, but the measured power consumption provides a good estimate how different features affect the battery life. For the actual battery running time see the next table.

For planning purposes, I suggest calculating with the following typical battery life when using a Garmin eTrex30x or a similar device. These values are based on actual trail experience.

| 1.2 V
| 2 x 25 g
| Lowest Long-Term-Cost. Suitable for recharging i.e. when carrying a solar panel or recharging in towns.
