From Chillan, it is 82km to Termas de Chillán. The first 72km are paved, and the last of a 8 dirt road in Good state. (The map mapa de turistel, shows it erroneously paved to the end).
[[Imagen:Paso_valle_aguas_calientes.jpg|thumb|200px|Pass to the valley of Aguas Calientes. Photo: Constanza Miranda]]
A few steps below the entrance to the public hot springs, towards the south, at the last curve before the parking lot, a path begins that ascends a forest of Coigües. At the start you will see a red and white sign the signals "Fumarolas->" (fumaroles), so it is difficult to get lost. This point is at 1.710 meters of altitude.

The path ascends through the forest on a very clear track. After some 30-40 minutes of walking, the vegetation disappears and the first fumaroles become visible. The route goes some 100 meters from them, so the detour is well worth it. Then you should keep going to the pass that leads to the mud baths. Here, thumb|200px|Aguas Calientes Valley as seen from the Pass. Photo: Juan Pablo Ortega you will see the pass for the first time, towards the east, located next to the left of a tower of rocks. At this point, you will have two options: descend to the mud baths and then ascend through the valley, or mount a few meters on the edge with direction to some second fumaroles.

If you decide for the fumaroles, once these cross, you will see a fork, which is not too visible. A path descends until reaching the valley and another follows the hillside without losing height, following a black tubbing that carries water to Termas de Chillán. Although the path that descends to the valley will make you lose height and goes back to the vegetation, it is a more comfortable trek than the traverse next to the tubbing (the waypoint "Estero", though, corresponds to the traverse route).

After about 30 minutes of walking through the forest the trees begin to lose height until the vegetation disappears again at 2080 meters. The track to the pass is very clear, at 2400 meters (2 to 3 hours by car).
You may find isolated spots of snow until the middle of the summer. From the pass, on a sunny day you may appreciate the volcán Antuco y la Sierra Velluda to the south.

==Season==
This trek can be done year round, but the ideal time is May, when the Oak trees are red, orange, and yellow. The winter months are also good when the Andes are covered in snow, and there is a beautiful view to the Aconcagua and company.
For those who chose to ascend by bike, you should be careful in those days that just after a front of bad weather, snow has fallen on the peak. During those days (4 or 5 days a year) it can be necessary to carry your bike on the final stretch.

Acceso a Caleu English

Route Description
thumb|200px|right|Height Profile of the Route
The route begins at the gate, where you must pay for the access. The path is clear to peak, since it is a vehicle road built for the construction and maintenance of the antennas at the peak. On a normal weekend (specially after a snowfall), you should find a few cars on the road. From the access gate, start west. The road ascends without stopping up to the peak. The first stretch is through the south edge of the hill. It then reaches the edge that divides the valleys of Caleu and Olmué. Towards the west you will have beautiful viewsthumb|200px|left|Ascent stretch. June, 2006 of the Ocoa palm grove and La Campana. Briefly after this first view of the valley of Olmué, a pedestrian fork appears to the path that leads to Ocoa. For the peak of El Roble, continue up the main vehicle road. You will then pass by a wooden fence to the left. Then the road penetrates the Oak forrest, and then begins a hard zig-zag. thumb|200px|right|View of La Campana to the West. June, 2006 Little before the peak, you will be able to see some of the transmission towers. The peak is a relatively large plain, with installations for telecommunication services that take away from the feeling of being outdoors, but the view is nevertheless beautifully impressive.

Estimated Time
*Trekking: 4 hours from the gate. It is possible to continue a little more by car and reduce the walking time.
*Mountain Bike: 2,5 hours from the gate.

Recommendations
It is recommended to do the ascent stretch on the vehicle road when it has snowed in Santiago. It can be done in randonnée or rackets, low difficulty. thumb|200px|left|Aconcagua and Mountain Range. August 11, 2007. Photo: Constanza Miranda
[[Imagen:Paso_valle_aguas_calientes.jpg|thumb|200px|Paso al valle de Aguas Calientes. Imagen: Constanza Miranda]]

From Los Andes, you should take the international road to Mendoza CH-60. Continue on this road for approximately 50 km and exit immediately before the 20-curve slope that ends in Portillo, here begins a dirt road that penetrates the same valley that the railroad used to travel to Mendoza, you can still see traces of its lines and installations. This road, is generally in good shape. After approximately 8 km you will see two houses, a summer residence for the valley muleteer. This is where the trek begins.

Puclic Transportation and Hitchhiking
Route Description
thumb|left|Ruta en Google Earththumb|right|Alto del Plomo Glacier This trek shares the first stretch of the route with the trek Glaciar del Juncal, follow it until crossing the river Monos de Agua. Once at the south river bank, you must follow the course of its waters towards the east. Depending on the start time, the area right before the crossing of the river can be a very good camping place, this way you will be sure to cross the river first time in the morning, when the river should be carrying less volumes of water. Starting here, the path gets somewhat lost. As a general rule, always keep on the south river bank. After about 45 minutes of crossing it, the hillside and the river practically[[imagen:Bifurcación Juncal y cruce estero monos de agua.jpg|thumb|left|Trek Fork Glaciar del Juncal and crossing of the Monos de Agua river]]get together leaving a very small space for the path, at times you will have to use the river rocks to make your way. This narrowing of the path does not last for more than 1 km. Once the river gets farther from the hillside again the trek continues for about 2,5 hours (approximately 3 km) until a slope gives an end to the valley. Ascend part of this slopethumb|right|Estimated Route and cross to the north of the river, once you have crossed you go up a narrow pass towards the east for approximately 1,5 hrs where you will reach the valley of the Alto del Plomo glacier. Here is a good place for your second camp.
From this point on you will no longer be able to distinguish the path, but the direction is clear since it is possible to see the glacier at a distance of 3 km. It is recommended to look well at you camping place and check for references so that you don't get lost on your way back from the glacier. From the tent penetrate thumb|right|Route to the Glacier the valley, after approximately 30 minutes you will reach the glacier's river, cross its north bank and follow its course for about 1,5 hours until reaching a spot thumb|left|Second crossing to the Monos de Agua river where it is more convenient to get to its ice on a straight line rather than going around. After about an hour you will reach the Alto del Plomo Glacier.
Take the same route back to the campsite and parking lot. It takes about 3 hours to the former, and an entire day to the later.
4 day Trek considering a first easy day of a walking for 3 hours. It is possible to do it in 3 days starting early on the first day. In this case the first and only camp site would be at the before the slope at the end of the Monos de Agua Valley.
Recommendations
It is possible to mount Alto del Plomo Glacier to get a global vision of this gigantic glacier or small ice field, that also hangs to Argentina to the river Plomo. Once high at the glacier, with mountain equipment (harness, rope, ice axe, crampons) and mountain knowledge, it is possible to transit on the glacier with direction north and ascend one of these beautiful mountains like Leon Negro, Leon Blanco, Alto del Rio Blanco, Central, among others. Consider two additional days to ascend one of these mountains.
