Ğ==Season 2025/26== ''' GPT 19 | 1/22-1/23 | 2 days | RR + OH4 | NOBO | Graham y Gabe?!''' Finally back after long hiatus getting tent fixed in Valdivia.Quick overnight on Puyehue!Didn’t see caretaker so couldn’t pay entrance—shucks!Stayed near Refugio, summited, there is clean water at -40.59558, -72.12107Headed out early, had to walk 8km on road, till picked up by guy who drove really fast. All the way to Osorno! * ''' GPT19 | 2026-02-18 to 2026-02-21 I 3,5 days | hiking | SOBO I Route: Option 2 - RR - Option 1 - RR - Option 4A - RR | Michaela ''' Day 1: I took a small bus from Futrono to Riñinahue, which runs daily on weekdays at 9:55 am in front of "Supermercado Big" (3,000 CLP). I was able to hitchhike until Pichico (4 km before Los Venados). Here I met the first GPT hiker directly on the trail - he was following a public GPT route from the internet. We walked together for a few hours. At Hector & Neris place we could refill water. They charged 5,000 CLP each for crossing their property and let us write our contacts in a book. After that, there was no more water for the day.Camp: -40.487822, -72.148836 Day 2: After the very impressive geysers, I took option 1 - the detour to the hot springs. Unfortunately, there was very little water and the water was too hot for a bath. While I was there, a family arrived with their private helicopter to visit the hot springs, but the water was too hot for them as well, so they left after 10 minutes. It was still a nice detour: the valley is beautiful. The first water I found since Hector & Neris was here. The big stream starts at -40.48677, -72.17843 and continues almost all the way to the hot springs.Camp: -40.529848, -72.17341 - not a great spot, but okay Day 3: Beautiful day hiking mainly on iron volcanic sand. There were 2 small streams with clear water: -40.56313, -72.14318 and -40.596121, -72.133504. All other streams were dry. I took option 4A up to Puyehue, and on the way down I made my own route.Camp: -40.602392, -72.134003 – nice flat spot protected from wind. There is a stream next to it, but the water has a milk-coffee color with a lot of sediment. Day 4: Descent to Anticura, arriving around noon. I stayed at Camping "Catrué", which is a really nice place in the rainforest with warm showers and electricity for every plot. It costs 18,000 CLP (up to 2 people). The restaurant there has very good food. Attractiveness: 5/5 Difficulty: 3/5   '''2026-02-20 to 2026-02-25 / 4.5 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR, Variant D, E, RR, Option 3, RR, (+Option 4 to summit) / Alina & Yannick''' Took night bus from Santiago to Futrono (it arrives early in the morning and all shops are still closed by then, if you need to buy something you have to wait until 8:30-9:00), then local bus from Futrono to Llifen, got offered a ride to Enrique's place for 15k$. We decided to follow Greg's advice and take Variant D, so we contacted Enrique the day before with the number provided. He was very talkative and accommodating and we paid him 2x10k$. He offered to drive us up to the bridge over Rio Nilahue, which we accepted. At the drop off where the gravel section starts we gave him another 10k$ for driving us and mentioned that we want to go swimming. After this, Enrique insisted to drive us further up to a nice swimming and camping spot (there is also a black gate but the signs say "uso publico", there are tables and benches in the forest and a descent to the river, which forms a nice lagoon) where we were finally dropped off, bathed and filled up our water stock. Took the RR until turning on variant 3 to get to the hot springs at -40.510952, -72.123191 because we were worried about water, as the water at [53.5/1330] were only small puddles. Traversing variant 3 has nice views of the lava flow and the plateau and impressive geysers/fumaroles but steep canyons made traversing more and more challenging. Finally, at the tip of the lava flow where the hot river emerges, crossing is no longer possible due to ongoing canyon incision, as the flanks are a too steep and the rubble is quite loose. We had a close call when we tried to cross the canyon, so we decided to camp on a suitable spot close to the lava flow and scout for a way down on the next day. The next day we found a way to the river following the canyon flank and had to ford the river (-40°30,6096', -72°07,3413' knee-deep but quick) to get to the other side. There is a nice camping spot close to the hot springs (actually two rivers, one hot and one warm with nice pools and shelters for shade), but it can get crowded on the weekends, as the locals also frequent this spot. To rejoin the trail we followed a route marked by orange tape up towards the lava stream. The way over the plateau was okay, but would have probably been nicer if there hadn't been clouds all day, which meant that we were either walking in fog or rain with very limited visibility. We set up our camp at (-40°35,5183', -72°08,1358'), which is close to a good flowing water stream fed by melting snow, so it should probably be running for quite some time. This is also a good base camp spot for the Puyehue Summit. We had great weather for the summit, the view is amazing, very worth it! On our way down we passed the empty refugio and met several local groups hiking up there. Also met fellow GPT hikers Christin and Jesse, that was very fun. Camped a little away from Santiago's Property to avoid conflicts and walked to rest of the way to the bus stop in the morning. We met noone on the way but had to climb two fences. The guard dogs were making a lot of noise but turned out to be very friendly. The bus still leaves around 7:30 am and took us to Osorno in ~2h for 2k CLP p.P. Overall attractiveness 4.5/5, difficulty 2/5 for the RR and 4.5/5 for the canyons on Variant 3A(Edit after doing GPT05: Yes, the canyon section really is a 4-5/5 in difficulty haha)
'''2026-01-25 to 2026-01-29 / 3 days + 1 zero / Hiking / SOBO / Option 2, RR, Option 1, RR, Option 4, RR / Chris & Lotte'''
The path (RR-MR) is managed and maintained by the municipality. its strange, that both entrys to it are crossing private property.
Last year, the gates on Variant D werent locked as well. This time we didnt check.
Another point to mention is: two times loose dogs charged at us. The first time one and he only hopped the fence after we had passed his propeety, so he didnt charge us. The second time three very aggressive dogs charged at us, even before we were halfway of their property. the brown one was actively trying to attack us. We fenced them off with our poles, didnt let them circle us and fought our way past them. No owner in sight, noone reacted to our "hola"s. Be prepared.
Water is a struggle. Couldnt confirm the water sources indicated by others, but found one spring at 40.562851, 072.142571 which I didnt encounter last year. It seems simply not reliable. There is very very little snow left. Some rivers were dry, that were flourishing last year. Hot spring had visibly lower water level than usual and defenitly hotter than last year and smelled a bit like piss for some reason.
If you want to make the bus at 7:30am a suitable campspot with water somewhat closeby is at 40.624894, 072.149846 (near water 75.4).
The refugio was crowded (not even the weekend). We were 12 people, therefore we stayed in our tent. The others didnt bring tents as they intended only to stay the night and summit the next morning.

'''2026-01-24 to 2026-01-27 / 3.5 days / Hiking / NOBO / RR / Basti, Isi, Maija, Steff'''

We did Puyehue NOBO in-and-out to the geysers with a detour to the hotsprings due to missing knowledge about alternative routes and to leave our luggage at Santiago's.

Day 1: We took a bus from Puerto Montt to Entre Lagos and easily got a hitch to the intersection to Hotel Puyehue/Aguas Calientes. We did not get a hitch from there in one hour waiting, but got an offer from the resident in the first house after the intersection to drive us for 20.000$. We started hiking relatively late (16:00) and climbed the fence of Santiago's property and payed 15.000$ pp for the right to use the path. The restaurant is closed, but the campsite could be used for 5.000$ pp. We slept the first night at Refugio El Caulle after a steep but not too difficult ascent. No problems/encounters with mice inside the hut (saw one outside though) and no other people (Saturday night). Very basic plank beds without mattresses, but relatively tidy.

Day 2: We found sufficient water in multiple spots along RR -40.60257, 72.13280 (W1), -40.59183, -72.13529 (W2), -40.56460, -72.14192 (W3), -40.56294, -72.14272 (W4), but afterwards none anymore this day. W1 had more and cleaner water in the morning than W2, but more sediments in the evening on day 3. W4 was superior to W3 and marked by a red canister slightly up the river bed before vanishing underground. We climbed up to the crater from -40.57792, -72.13386 which was short but steep. We made camp at -40.49311, -72.15954 close to the geyser but up the slopes without finding water close by. Due to the humidity of the geyser, we had wet and a little icy tents in the morning.

Day 3: We did the hotsprings -40.46725, -72.20692, some 3kms after the end of the path in OSM, return and found great water at -40.48677, -72.17843 with a stream in the whole valley. We walked back on RR. We slept at -40.60240, -72.13383 which was nicely flat with water closeby (W1, lots of sediments in the evening). Nice star sky. In the night, the wind picked up and it got very dusty though.

Day 4: We climbed up to the crater again, this time the path from the refugio visible on OSM. Easier but more elevation. By the time we came back to the refugio at around 11/12, there were 3 people for the night. Hiked down to the street again and continued to the camping in Anticura for food. Nice restaurant and cheap camping, no store with nice waterfalls close by (possibility so swim).

We really enjoyed the hike! Gaitors would have been nice, the loose volcanic rocks are really tough on shoes and socks. We took the small (and only) early morning bus back to Osorno, around 7:30, stopping both in Anticura and at Santiago's.
