22 FEB-2026 to 1 MAR-2026 / 8 days / hiking / NOBO / Option from Lonquimay with connecting to RR GPT 12 and 11 / Ben, Stephanie
Micro for Troyo leaves Lonquimay at 4 pm from the bus terminal (or 5 am from a different location near the terminal—ask in the terminal). Get off at the crossroad for Balsa Rahue. Good camping at the Bio Bio crossing (and fun swim). Ferry seems to run every week day morning for sure. Saturday maybe. You may have to shout for the ferry operador who lives on the other side of the river.
Clear double track and eventually single track on the east side of Rio Rahue to eventually join the RR. Occasionally lost the trail because the horse trails are going to different puestos so use GPS.
A few addtl notes:
Great waterside campsite at Laguna Marananqi on the shore a bit south of the wetlands. Banos Coyucos pleasantly warm. Fumeroles below Cerro Dedos fantastic. We opted out of the ridge route due to weather concerns. We dropped down to connect with GPT 11 coming up from Ranquil.
About piñones: There were tons. We learned in Lonquimay that if you crack open the raw ones using your back teeth, you can easily remove the shell. We then cut the raw de-shelled piñones into a few pieces and put them in with rice and noodles. They cooked up nicely and took no more gas than the rice or noodles.

I combined GPT11 and GPT12 (joined at km 9.2 coming from 11-01). 6 days total
Awesome week on the trail, so many highlights!: camp at baños Cayuco (hot spring and piñones falling around), the trail from there to laguna Mariñanqui, the ridge on option 03D, the camp at {12-I} [1.5/1675], a long 2nd breakfast (mate and pavo de harina tostada) offered at Puesto Maximiliano [72.1/1549], or the final night at laguna verde. All in good weather. Just love it all!
Puesto {12} [67.2/1822] is abandoned.
There is a Puesto in laguna Verde (-38.51827, -70.98890) I opted to camp at the other end of the lake (small grassy spot with a pit fire and 2 wooden benches)
I finished at RR km 91.8, when a family in a camioneta offered me a lift to Liucura.
In Liucura I stayed at Hospedaje Normita, 15.000 CLP p/night. Recommended.
Good stocked shop where to resupply: 'Donde Carlitos' (with money exchange), by the border control. Another one just in front.

NOTE ON 12-03D:
Jan suggested that It would be useful if someone investigates this connection. Here are my comments afterwards:
-On good whether, easy hike and beautifull views till the Puesto (easier than 11-01 or 09-RR final ridge to TrapaTrapa). From the Puesto, an easy downhill through forest on TL+MR . A good candidate to become RR.
-From the highest point of the CC (about km 3.5 from start 03D, 2173m on OSM map), you see the puesto, and its an easy CC on an straight line (the suggeated route, keeps following the main ridge).
-At the Puesto I met the puestero and had a nice chat with him (and 2 carabineros). Looks like he will be ok with hikers passing by. There is limited phone signal and limited water (that he gets with a pipe from far away).
- First water I found since RR [52.2/1335], was a tiny creek below the Puesto at (-38.41893, -71.06664), looks also ok for camp.

Day 1: I connected GPT11 with GPT12 via Option 1. I started GPT12 around 2 pm, after lunch at Pelehue Hot Spring. I did not bathe there; the water was milky, muddy, and only lukewarm, but the surroundings were very beautiful. At Baños Coyucos, there were many people with tents and horses (unfortunately, I arrived on a Saturday), so I decided to skip them. I camped here: -38.190587, -71.052715. The spot was not very flat, but it was somewhat hidden and next to water.
Day 2: I realized I did not have enough food to complete the section, so I decided to go to Lonquimay tomorrow via Option 2. I camped here: -38.354168, -71.16396, a very nice grassy spot next to the river.
Day 3: I crossed the river to follow Option 2a, then headed to Lolén to get a lift to Lonquimay from the main road. I was lucky: about 3 km before the main road, a bus to Lonquimay passed and I could hop on (around 13:20). In Lonquimay I stayed at a very nice place: Hostal Patagonia Norte 25.000 CLP per night including breakfast.
At the bus terminal in Lonquimay the gave me this information:
Busses to Licura: daily (not sure about weekends) at 15:00
Busses to Icalma: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:00 and 15:00

Information for ferry on option 5G out of Lonquimay;
We were told by Fernando (operator)
- operates Monday to Friday 8:30 am -5:30 pm
- operates 8 am -10 am Saturday 4 pm -6 pm
- Doesn't run Sunday
- Government paid, Free
- Fernando typically takes lunch around 1 pm for an hour
- Fernando says you cross without the boat it's waist deep

Option 5G - hitch to ferry out of Lonquimay
We took option 2 to connect to RR.
Camp 1 [33.9/1281] Launga Mariñanqui. Beautiful place, plenty of flat ground and sheltered, water from the lake. Meet a group of tourists on a horse riding trip
Day 2
Stopped at hot springs Banos Coyucos, pretty nice set up. Campground looks good here
Summited Cero Dedos via option 4 (Cumbre Cero Dedos). We were considering our options here but storm clouds were rolling in. Hiked down via option 2B hot springs, great set up. Connected back to RR and camped at hot springs on variant D with cow poo
Day 3
Continued along RR, connect to GPT10 via option 1C
Puesto {10-01C} [23.3/1260] very friendly

Met a gaucho looking for lost goats (20)
Camped at Hot Spring {10-01} [15.1/1812] (Pucon Mahuida). Found some flatish spots, water wasn't that clear from glacier (clear stream close to the road), exposed

Found water along the way up

Summited Copahue via GPT10 option 2 (Cumbre Copahue)

We got picked up by two electricians on the road. They took us to a local house who feeds them breakfast every morning. They were so lovely, we paid 20,000 CLP per person for a bed inside, dinner and breakfast
